Selling Water by the River

This is part of something written by Nick Walser in an article called Selling Water by the River. Sounds wise to me.

" There is no perfect "You" running around in some elysian field somewhere, free of faults and worries. You are whole exactly where you stand now, you are absolutely sufficient for the task in hand"

"Everyone carries a shadow and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is" - Carl Gustav Jung.

F1 Suzuka Circuit Japan

love this sport but wonder if older circuits like this one in Japan could be made safer - the gravel run off areas made bigger before 2010 and maybe roll back to a one hour qualifying session, less stress for the drivers so maybe less accidents - it is terrifying to see head on collisions into walls, dont want to watch drivers being smashed up

Falling stars

Very sleepy today, stayed up fo a while and saw three but meant to be over 80 passing an hour. Most magical thing. Last night was little tricky to see after midnight because of a bright moon thou best time is before dawn. Plenty of planes too, wondered about them flying in a sky full of small hurtling space rocks. Huge night sky filled with stars.

Buckingham Palace

Walked past Buckingham Palace yesterday and the excitement of the capital city and landmarks was huge but think the noise of the traffic must drive them nuts. Loved seeing the shiny big hotels like Park Lane and Mayfair with immaculate doormen in top hats and buildings with flowers growing vertically down the walls - all the places from the Monopoly Board. Wish could travel maybe on a 'duck tour' into the Thames or watch an outdoor play in Regents Park or Shakespeares' Globe beside the river as the sun goes down but it was also nice to jump on the train and leave the dusty city behind and go home

French lavender

Busy cutting lavender before the heavy rain and thunder makes it too damp, but left plenty for the bees. My mum makes lavender wands, weaving ribbon somehow between long sticks, you need an odd number and they need to be fresh.

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it was often 'strewn' on the floors of homes, castles and streets to keep insects away and mask smells. Ho hum

Below are links for uses of lavender - not so sure about using lavender in food, i made some lavender biscuits and felt ill for some time near lavender

Thousands of French chipmunks heading west across Europe

Thousands of chipmunks carrying potentially fatal diseases have been spreading west across Europe and have reached Paris. In the woods around northern Paris, there are estimated to be more than 100,000.

The chipmunks are not shy and are very approachable and look very sweet and cuddly.

French experts warn that the animals, which can carry rabies and ticks causing Lyme disease, could soon reach Calais and sneak aboard vehicles and vessels heading to Britain.

Cycling in the hour before it gets dark and four small pointy nose things shot out from a bank making funny noises, infront of me, behind me and strait through the bicycle ...maybe they had stood for a while waiting to go across the road and one of them had said "Go" ...Realised i was screaming quite a bit and trying to lift my feet up, thinking they would bite me. but they all ran off again.

Japanese Legends

When i was little my parents told us storys when we went to bed that they made up. One was about a mouse that lived in a drawer under the cooker, others about our chinese geese Chow and Lei that lived in the orchard and then there was finger man and stinky poo that lived in the medicine cupboard and came to school with us. Somewhere in their attic is an old tape machine with these storys.

Thought about this today, for no particular reason or maybe because of a Clematis called
Fuji-Musume, with beautiful sky blue flowers which is also a famous classical dance from the Kabuki theater in Japan. Fuji (wisteria) Musume (maiden)...a tale about the 'Wisteria Maiden'

Beauty in the rain

Today an artist from Poland knocked on our door with his charcoal sketches. We bought a sketch of a hare, a tall ship outside Gedansk and another of people huddled in a wagon in the Russian countryside. This reminded me a little of stories my mother told us of her father's background and a little of Tess of the D'Urbervilles. The rain fell as he walked away.

Fudge Cookies

225g Soft butter
110g Caster sugar
275g Plain flour
300g of very small chopped up fudge

Banana (sliced) or blueberries
Sprinkle of cinnamon

Preheat oven to 170°C (325°F) Gas Mark 3
Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy. Sift in the flour and bring the mixture together to form a dough. Then add fudge with your hands.
Use a spoon to scoop a walnut sized ball of mixture, as almost too soft to roll out. Flatten with a fork and bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until they are light golden brown. (Makes about 30)

Burned fingers warning .. if the fudge pieces are toooo big (because you thought this would taste even nicer) .. it will ooze out of the biscuits. If this happens it will be tricky to get the biscuits off the trays, wait too long and you will have fudge flavoured burned trays forever or not enough and you will have very burned fingers. Hmm.

League table of European youngsters' well-being

Maybe its about money and the social system, Elterngeld exists in Germany, France and Scandinavia.

A huge incentive in Scandinavian countries is that parents can share being off work during the first year of their new baby's life at around two thirds their annual salary and this continues into the second and third year, although at a lower rate. And when baby number two comes along after the third year, this system starts again

Maybe this is what whoever holds the purse in UK Government could be thinking about to make happier children and maybe other countries in Europe working long hours. Encourage families to be togethor and not so stressed at least when the children are little - think this would be worth paying more tax for

Not surprisingly in Scandinavian countries which are top of this league table, family policies have a downside for women, companies are reluctant to hire or promote women because they take so much time off to raise their children.

Rent a cherry tree

The price of renting a cherry tree is £35. For this, the orchard will look after your tree for you to pick at harvest. All the cherries on ‘your’ tree are yours.

As a guide, the price of cherries in supermarkets can range from £6 - £12 a kilogram. The yield on your tree will vary, but in an optimum year could be as much as 15-20 kilograms.

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman were stranded on a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and one day they found a magic lamp. When they rubbed it. a genie appeared and granted them each any one wish they desired. 'I'd like to be back in London.' said The Englishman and he was whisked back to London. 'I'd like to be back in Glasgow,' said The Scotsman and he too was whisked away. 'I'm very lonely here all on my own,' said The Irishman, 'I wish my friends were back again.'

Village

isn't it funny, just when the clouds get as black as they can, suddenly someone does something nice.. they say you need a village to raise a child and i think this could be true but here in the west, i think for a lot of us that doesn't exist - for different reasons. mostly we all rush around doing things and dont notice maybe someone needs us.

Going underground

Every year, the caves underneath the cobbled streets of Arras in France are transformed into a living garden.
This year, from 15 March to 22 June, the theme is music.

Chocolate strawberry

First time taking my things to a wedding fair. Dresses and jewellery there were beautiful and a chocolate fountain very close to me :) - there is a place on Hastings pier in the summer that makes lovely chocolate strawberrys

Happy

Strolling round Ikea, checking out all the lights, storage and small things, meatballs with lingonberry sauce, daim cake. Like a theme park for homesick Swedes - the odd elk crossing the route from time to time, would be fun :O)

Compassionate communication

Sometimes find communication tough either because you cant find words or what comes out of your mouth isn't what you mean. Talking is easy but maybe not communicating .. someone told me about a book written about this and found this website

Under milkwood

Something about the nearly spring evening ..

"To begin at the beginning: It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea. The houses are blind as moles (though moles see fine tonight in the snouting, velvet dingles)..."

Small furry creature

..or maybe discovered a design flaw in nissan cars.. turned on the engine and closed the car door, to keep the car warm while scraping frost off the windscreen and got locked out.. with my house keys, bag and phone in the car. Didn't think this was possible. Several hours later and slightly blue from frostbite, a man from nissan turned up with a skeleton key. Seems ice can get down into the lock and somehow short circuit the system and lock the car. Have a more interesting theory.. little green men with remote controls.

Hyviä unia, oman kullan kuvia

Last night an almost full moon turned the fields and hedges around to silver while large clouds billowed across the sky - seems incredible that across an ocean it's still afternoon and across another ocean it's already tomorrow, but we all look at the same moon.

Snusmumriken

There is a character in the moomin books called snufkin, at the end of Finn Family Moomintroll, when
winter comes, snufkin sniffs the air and knows its time
to be travelling south but promises to return in the spring.

Woke up to snow :)

The adventures of Huxley Joly

Racing at Plumpton cancelled as temperatures dropped to -7.5 overnight, so walked over the fields to Stoneywish (little bit scary) and found this in the papers over a hot cup of coffee http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/columnists/dom-joly/dom-joly-huxleys-brave-new-world-of-robotic-surveillance-1224216.html

Very frosty but no snow

Temperatures may drop to -5 degrees the next few nights, sort of impressive for the South of England, but no snow. Ive been pruning vines and apple trees when the sun melted the frost but the temperatures dropped below zero few hours later.. Tomorrow im taking my calendars to Plumpton race track and hoping...

Wondered if its Venus and Mars so bright in the sky the last few nights.
